No one killed jessica – review

Listen to Stavans: Ratnakar Pachisi | Tu Mane Bhagwaan | Bhaktamar | Maitribhav

Okay, I agree it has been a while now that I haven’t updated my blog – or posted any movie review. To be honest, there haven’t been any good movies recently that would inspire me to write something about it. Some things that came up to my mind were – oh the movie was good, but why would i recommend it to my friends etc.

Last night I went for back to back movies – in a chilly cold London. Yes, fortunately its not snowing but it was cold enough to force me stay inside the cinema for 6 hours.

Gulliver’s Travels 3D was my first – while we were the only people in the cinema hall (well it was a Friday afternoon, so cant expect people to bunk office and watch movies of course). The movie was average – except the last song “War, what is it good for” which was quite sick. Rest of it was good.. umm could be much better. The movie was quite similar to Jajantaram Mamantaram . If you ask me, I found the Hindi flick much more entertaining – even if it wasn’t a 3D.

The second movie was No One Killed Jessica.

I remember during my college days – when i was least interested in media reports and news channels – there was this case which everyone was glued to… The Murder of Jessica Lal. While I followed the case later in 2006-07 i was still wondering whether it was worth for protesters and Jessica’s sister to stick around for so long because its been 6 yrs and I do not believe in Indian Judiciary system. You end up delaying the trial for so long that people lose faith and courage and then eventually end their hopes in nailing the culprits.

Well about the movie.. when I decided to go into the movie, i knew the case – and i knew what the story was – but even if you know the story, it still hits you hard to watch the pain the people went through, and to watch how cold blooded a few set of people were. Rani Mukherjee was perfect. Vidya Balan has always been excellent in such roles. It is not easy to live up to such a character especially when it is a true story. I am not going to explain the whole story  because that is what you would find in all move reviews.

While I do see a few loop holes and few places where I thought, ah this could have been done in a better way – I think it is not fair to be a critic watching the efforts that have been put up by each of the actors be it the lawyers, killers or family members.  There have been a some moments which hits you really hard and makes you think of what are you actually doing, and where you are.

It is one of those movies that covers the real-life events on how media covered the story and how cold hearted most of us are. When I say most of us, it is because I know if we are put in those situations, we would be lame or cowards. We don’t have the strength to fight for others – there are a few people around but not everyone has the courage to think about others.

I strongly recommend this movie for everyone – watch it for Jessica – watch it for something called ‘life’

Gandhi Before Gandhi

Gandhi before Gandhi is a Gujarati Drama (play).  It is a play dedicated to the life of a forgotten Jain Scholar Shri Virchand Raghav Gandhi (1864 – 1901).

Chetan Damania as Virchand Gandhi

Chetan Dhanani as Virchand Gandhi

Shri Virchand Raghav Gandhi is being portrayed by Chetan Dhanani, who was absolutely amazing. I could find the audience applauding almost all of his dialogues.

Shri Virchand Raghav Gandhi was born on 25 August 1864 at Mahua in Gujarat and died at the young age of 37 on 7 August 1901. His short life was dedicated to the cause of Jainism and service to mankind. Besides mastering as many as fourteen languages, his religious knowledge was not restricted to Jainism alone. He was a student also of Buddhism, Vedanta Philosophy, Christianity and Western Philosophy. He was appointed the honorary Secretary of the Jain Association of India at the very young age of 21. He was instrumental in getting the slaughter house at the sacred Hills of Sammetshikarji closed down and in getting the poll tax that was levied on Jain pilgrims at Shatrunjaya Tirth by the Thakore Saheb of Palitana abolished.

He was a true patriot. When India was facing a devastating famine in 1897 he was responsible for sending Rs. 40,000/- towards famine relief and a shipload of grains to India from U.S.A. for famine relief.

He represented the Jain religion in the first ever held parliament of World Religions at Chicago in 1893. He spoke on various Indian Philosophical systems. He defended Indian culture setting right several areas of misinformation. He delivered about 535 speeches on Jainism, other religions and cultural and social life in India. He founded several institutions and societies in the west. He wrote books on Jain philosophy, yoga philosophy, the concept of Karma and the six systems of Indian philosophy. He also translated a French book “An Unknown Life of Jesus Christ”

Virchand Gandhi was also recognized and honored by Government of India by issuing a 5 Rupee stamp.

The Drama is definately worth watching, not only for Jain friends but also everyone who feels for the forgotten hero Shri Virchand Raghav Gandhi.
